Germantown: A Peninsula Neighborhood With 270 Years of History

Germantown sits on a peninsula between Town River Bay to the west and Rock Island Cove to the east, land that was known as Shed’s Neck as far back as the 1640s. In the 1750s General Joseph Palmer and Richard Cranch, John Adams’s brother-in-law, tried to build a planned community here for German glassmakers and weavers. The venture failed by 1760, but the name Germantown stayed, and Palmer Street still runs down the middle of the neighborhood.

Shipbuilding took over in the late 1700s, and in 1861 a ferry linked Germantown with Quincy Point. Today Germantown is a primarily residential neighborhood with water on both sides, a corner store locals call the Blue Store, Snug Harbor elementary school, and the Germantown Neighborhood Center in the former St. Boniface Church.

Germantown real estate includes single-family homes, two-families and condos, and buyers often come here for the water and the quiet streets. As a Germantown Realtor, Mikel knows how homes on the peninsula compare with the rest of Quincy, and how views, lot size and distance to the water change what a home is worth.

Two homes a few blocks apart in Germantown can sell for very different prices. A Germantown Realtor who tracks recent real estate sales here can tell you which features buyers pay more for and which ones they overlook, so you buy or sell at the right number. Mikel has followed Germantown real estate for years and brings that knowledge to every client.

Buying and Selling Real Estate in Germantown

Buying a home in Germantown

Fewer homes come up in Germantown than in the larger Quincy neighborhoods, so it pays to have a real estate agent watching for new listings and ready to move. Mikel previews Germantown real estate with you, checks flood zones and insurance on homes near the water, and helps first-time buyers and families write offers that stand out.

Selling your Germantown home

Many Germantown homes have been in the same family for years, and selling one starts with an honest price. Mikel prices your home with recent Germantown and Quincy real estate sales, prepares it for photos and showings, and markets it to buyers who want the peninsula, whether it is a single-family home or a two-family.

Working with a Germantown Realtor

Mikel handles your sale or purchase himself, not a rotating team. You get one Realtor who knows your goals, returns your calls and coordinates the attorney, lender, inspector and other agent so nothing slips between offer and closing.

Past clients send their friends and neighbors to Mikel, and many of his Germantown real estate clients found him that way. If you are interviewing Realtors in Germantown, ask him for references.
