Merrymount, Quincy: Where the City Began

Merrymount is where Quincy started. In 1625 a small group of English colonists cleared land on the hills above Quincy Bay and called it Mare Mount, and two years later Thomas Morton put up the maypole that later inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story “The May-Pole of Merry Mount.” Today Merrymount is a quiet, mostly residential neighborhood between Quincy Center and Adams Shore, and most of its homes were built in the first half of the 1900s.

That makes Merrymount real estate mostly single-family homes on established streets, close to the water and a short drive or bus ride from Quincy Center and the Red Line. As a Merrymount Realtor, Mikel sees the same buyers come back to this neighborhood again and again: families moving up from a condo or a starter home, and Quincy homeowners who want more space without leaving the city.

Merrymount real estate also holds its value well. Homes close to the water, on a quiet side street or with a garage and a yard tend to sell first, and a Merrymount real estate agent who knows those differences can save a buyer from overpaying and help a seller price with confidence. That local knowledge is why Quincy families call Mikel when they want a Realtor who knows Merrymount street by street.
